Johnny Depp’s artwork collection, “Never Fear Truth,” which includes 3,850 non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on Ethereum, has experienced an increase in price following the actor’s recent legal victory against ex-wife Amber Heard in a defamation suit. As of writing, the collection’s floor price is 0.52 ETH (approximately $944), and its price had not seen significant movement since March 11, when the floor price peaked at 1.64 ETH before the televised defamation trial. The collection launched in January with a starting price of 0.70 ETH while Ethereum traded at $2,664 per CoinMarketCap.
The generative art collection on OpenSea features Depp’s artwork and was verified as authentic by MakersPlace last month. It includes images of Depp’s “Friends and Heroes,” such as Heath Ledger, Tim Burton, River Phoenix, Elizabeth Taylor, Al Pacino, and Hunter S. Thompson, among others, with 607 of the pieces featuring Depp himself. According to the collection’s description, Depp focused on people who had inspired him in his life, and each image is an intimate reflection of their character in Depp’s eyes.
Each “Never Fear Truth” NFT will serve as membership to a creative community and provide access to future releases by Depp, according to the OpenSea listing. Depp is not the first controversial celebrity to enter the NFT market, as rapper and actor Ice-T launched an NFT collection with Niftify in December. His 1992 album “Body Count” and its protest song “Cop Killer,” written from the perspective of a character fed up with police brutality, sparked nationwide controversy.
However, NFTs have become a subject of controversy, with some gamers and artists pushing back against what they view as a cash grab or even a scam, not to mention the environmental impact of NFTs minted on proof-of-work blockchains like Ethereum, which is currently in the process of shifting to a proof-of-stake algorithm.
