French president, Emmanuel Macron, has stated that Russia is using food and energy as weapons of war for which reason Africa must move to ensure sufficiency in food production.
He said, Russia’s war on Ukraine had triggered a global food crisis which is adversely affecting African economies.
“Clearly, we are all being attacked by some who blame European sanctions for causing the world food crisis, and therefore the African food crisis.
“It’s a load of rubbish, it’s totally false, it’s that food and energy have become weapons of Russian warfare. On the other hand, it makes our responsibilities clearer, we must help the African continent produce more for itself,” he said at a press conference in Cameroon.
Macron is on a three-nation African tour which has seen him already visit Cameroon and Benin, his trip is seen as part of Europe’s bid to counter Russian propaganda on the Ukraine war. His last stop is in Guinea-Bissau.
Europe is suffering from an energy crisis following the decision of Russia – its main energy supplier – to place restrictions on supply amid the war.
In the case of Africa, analysts say almost all countries have been impacted by the war especially with respect to the supply of critical agricultural supplies like wheat affecting price of bread in most countries.
